TRAVEL TIPS:
Rental cars and your bike. A common problem with rental cars in France is that they don't rent bike carriers to add on. This means you need to get a car large enough to fit your bike box and/or assembled bike in order to travel around. We do encourage rental cars in some places as a way to get around in the back country, and especially the mountains much easier. Usually, you need to take at a minimum a mid size car with hatchback, but if you have more than 1 bike box, you need to go larger. Another option is to buy a bike rack and mount it on your rental. They start at about 50 euros, so not too much really. This however doesn't solve the problem of your bike box, as a bike rack will only carry an assembled bike. So, to save money from renting a large car, you would need a place to store your bike box near to your car rental pickup and drop location.
Parking: a serious drawback to a rental car is parking. First finding a place to park, even in small towns, and paying for parking. Whatever you do, do not leave valuables in a rental car except out of sight. A bike can't be put out of sight though. This is more true in large cities than small towns, but you can never be sure.
Note: a lot of the small TER trains in the French countryside carry fully assembled bikes. You can see these trains and schedules at www.sncf.com
